Embrace the Power of “That’s Interesting”

Over the years, I’ve noticed a good friend and client use a phrase that has always impressed me, and I want to share it with you.

That’s interesting.

I’ve heard her say it with various expressions and voice inflections. The phrase might mean something different each time, depending on the situation and to whom she is speaking.

It seems to work when she thinks what’s been offered is just downright ignorant. She doesn’t say your idea or suggestion is ignorant; she says, “That’s interesting.”

I’ve heard her say it when she’s not getting the desired response, such as when someone tells her something isn’t possible because [some reason]. When she says, “That’s interesting,” in this context, she really means, “We haven’t found the solution yet.”

I’ve heard it used when she learns something new and useful, which helps her push forward with plans. At that moment, “That’s interesting” is like, “Aha! What I’ve been waiting for!”

Why is this response so powerful?

It offers a valuable pause. In a world where media blares 24/7, and we’re inundated with information, often moving from activity to activity in a nearly reactive mode, this phrase can create space and time to reflect.

It’s a response without a commitment. You can let someone know you’ve heard them and understand where they’re coming from, even if you disagree. What they presented is now in the bucket of “for consideration.”

“That’s interesting” doesn’t escalate a conflict. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of someone stridently asserting their views, having a respectful counter-response readily available that can be used in various situations can be extremely helpful.

“That’s interesting” might give you space to contemplate what’s been offered, even if you initially disagree. Haven’t we all, at some time, changed our minds, moved to another position, or decided our initial reaction wasn’t our final answer? Who doesn’t enjoy the company of someone willing to reconsider their viewpoint?

Finally, “That’s Interesting” reminds me that we live in a world full of wonder, surprises, things to learn, and opportunities we didn’t anticipate. It gives us time to consider pursuing possibilities that may not be evident yet. It’s a great reminder that how we engage each other on the journey makes all the difference.
